W2: Islam & Sustainable Development
Islam & Environmental Sustainability
Hello everyone! Welcome back to my blog π
In week 2, we learned about Islam and Sustainable Development, which consists of three main subtopics, which are Islam and Environmental, Social, and Economic Sustainability. So for this post, I'm eager to share and do the reflection on Islam and Environmental Sustainability.
Islam teaches its believers to sustain and protect the environment as it is a part of the fundamentals in Islam, in which human beings must maintain the relationship with the environment besides the relationship with Allah and fellow human beings. Environmental sustainability and preservation are very emphasized and concerned in Islam in order to create a harmonious, comfortable, and balanced atmosphere on earth.
Back to my previous post which I've shared about the environment around my house, there is a lot of trees and flowers. As you can see from the pictures, the trees and flowers grow lush and beautiful. It is because my family really takes good care of them. We always make sure that they get enough water every day. Lush and healthy plants make our home environment's scenery more beautiful and attractive. Besides, we were also able to enjoy the fruits of fruiting plants such as cherry tomatoes, lemons, chilies, Brazilian spinach leaves, and many more. Here are some close-up pictures of fruiting plants in my house!
Since my father was a graduate of a bachelor’s degree in Horticultural Science in UPM, he has run a nursery since about 15 years ago until now. But during that 15 years, he had stopped the business for a while for some reason and then continuing it back again now. My father very loves to plant trees and flowers. He is so professional in this field as he knows and remembers all the types of flowers and even their scientific names π. Let's see some of the pictures of my father's nursery that I've taken:
This nursery is fully managed by him and assisted only by us because for now, my father can't find any suitable worker to help him manage this nursery. For your information, this is our new nursery. The old one is bigger than this and has more variety of flowers.
To be honest, I feel so glad to have this kind of father, who loves plants because it makes me realize the importance of all these plants in our lives. I just realized that this is a very good action for environmental sustainability. From the Prophet SAW, he said: "It is not a Muslim who plants crops or sows seeds and then (the result) is eaten by humans, birds or livestock but it becomes charity for him." (HR Tirmizi No: 1303) Thus, planting trees and flowers is also considered a charity for humans and animals, which will surely be rewarded by Allah in the hereafter.
Every human being in this world is responsible to sustain and preserve the environment and will be questioned in the hereafter. To conclude, if we can't afford to plant trees, at least we have to take care of the existing trees and the environment. Don't ever try to destroy and damage the environment. As Allah said in the Quran which means "And cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. And invoke Him in fear and aspiration. Indeed, the mercy of Allah is near to the doers of good." (Al-A'raf: 56) Therefore, we should concern more about the environment to sustain them especially for the sake of future generations.
Thank you for reading! I hope you can get something from this post. To be continue π

MasyaAllah, I love your plants!
