W5: Maqasid Al-Shariah & Sustainable Development

What is Maqasid Al-Shariah?

The topic of this week's lesson is very interesting which is Maqasid Al-Shariah πŸ’š

From my understanding, 'Maqasid' is originated from an Arabic term, which means principles, objectives, purpose. Meanwhile, 'Al-Shariah' is also an Arabic term with the meaning of Islamic law. So basically, Maqasid Al-Shariah is about the objectives or principles of Islamic Law, which encompasses the aspects of Akidah, Ibadah and Akhlak to achieve human well-being physically and spiritually. Maqasid Al-Shariah plays a role in maximizing goodness/benefits (maslahah), and preventing harm (mafsadah) to the life of human beings. The objectives of the Shari’ah can be divided into three, namely the essentials or necessities (daruriyyat), the needs (hajiyyat) and the complementary (tahsiniyyat).

➤ 'The utmost objective of Shariah is to promote and protect the well-being of people and nature, which lies in the safeguarding of five fundamental objectives of Shariah':

1) Hifz Al-Din (preservation of religion)
2) Hifz Al-Nafs (preservation of life)
3) Hifz Al-'Aql (preservation of intellect)
4) Hifz Al-Nasb (preservation of lineage)
5) Hifz Al-Mal (preservation of wealth)

Maqasid Al-Shariah is correlated with sustainable development, where both of them are aiming to achieve human well-being while sustaining the resources and needs of human beings. Thus, the implementation or execution of sustainable development must be aligned with Maqasid Al-Shariah so that it remains on the right path and achieves the goals as planned.

How can I apply the concept of Maqasid Al-Shariah and Sustainable Development in my current situation and life?

Currently, I am still a student and am staying at home due to the outbreak. As for now, I think the most important thing for me to do is to take care of myself by not getting involved in anything that could put me at risk of getting the Covid-19 virus. For example, staying at home if there is no necessary thing to do outside, not getting involved in mass gatherings, always putting on the face mask and keeping the physical distancing with other people when in any public place, sanitize my hands regularly and always checkup if I have gotten some early symptoms of the virus. Thus, my life can be preserved from getting the virus and other contagious diseases, as well as other people's lives too especially my loved ones.

Another thing that I can apply is studying diligently despite facing many challenges and tests in coping with online learning. Undeniably, online learning has many weaknesses and shortcomings compared to physical learning. There are many problems that can interrupt the online learning sessions such as low internet connection,  house under construction, feeling disconnected from my friends, demotivated and many more. The most thing that lacks in online learning is that losing the human touch. As human beings, we need human touch to feel the warmth, sweetness and bitterness of life by socializing and interacting in real life. Only that we can achieve success in our life. However, despite all that, I realized that everything happened for a reason. Regardless of anything that happens, I must seek for knowledge to protect my mind and intellect from being frozen and deteriorating. I must use the intellect lent by Allah the best I can so that I can produce thoughtful and reasonable ideas later on. For that way, I can preserve my mind and intellect for the benefits of myself as well as for society and ummah, in line with the objectives of Maqasid Al-Shariah and sustainable development.

Before I end my post, I would like to attach a video from Youtube to give you a clearer picture about Maqasid Al-Shariah as shared by my lecturer:

That is all for this week's post. See you!
