W9: Challenges to Sustainable Development

Image
Drivers of Unsustainable Development This time, I would like to write about drivers of unsustainable development, which is part of the challenges to sustainable development. There are three drivers of unsustainable development: 1) Economic mal-development 2) Unethical social values 3) Environmental debt Unfortunately, these three drivers are very prevalent in our country. Thus, I want to emphasize one of the three drivers, which I think the most prevalent among our society especially during this pandemic, which is unethical social values. This is also related to the government system in our country. Unethical Social Values Lately, since the pandemic Covid-19 occurred, the situation of our country is very chaotic because of the rules and Standard Operation Procedures (SOP) that the government has implemented to reduce the risk of Covid-19 spread. However, the enforced SOP that should be followed by all Malaysians, and the fines imposed on all Malaysians who violate, do not appear to be ...

W8: Role of Students in Sustainable Development

Image
Greetings to all of you!  This week, we have learned about the roles of universities in Sustainable Development. Indeed, the university plays a big and important role in sustainability. However, the university will not be able to fulfil its role without the roles of students in sustainable development. So, what is the role of students in sustainable development? As one of the students of IIUM, I want to share and reflect on our role in seeking knowledge for the sake of sustainable development, or in other term is "learning for sustainability". In fact, this is not only for sustainability, but it is for every single thing that we learn in our life. Thus, we must understand and apply this concept of learning to ensure that the knowledge we learn is blessed by Allah and beneficial for other people. Learning for Sustainability 1) Knowledge (to know)   As a student, we should instil a sense of curiosity to know and learn about everything as motivation in learning. When we are dead...

(Photo by  Vlada Karpovich  from  Pexels ) Hello everyone! Welcome back to my blog πŸ’– Actually, for this week, we were learning about the roles of institutions for sustainable development, which emphasized SDG number 16 and 17. However, I would like to write about the individual role for sustainable development for my reflection blog since the institutions' roles are beyond my control and ability. So in this post, I will write and reflect on what I and other individuals can do to sustain the resources and contribute to sustainable development.  Individual Role for Sustainable Development  The individual role may seem insignificant, but in fact, the individual role is very important and contributes significantly to sustainable development. Our commitment and awareness are very matter and needed in achieving sustainable development goals. Thus, I have discovered some ways in which I can apply and practice at my current state for sustainability.    1) App...

W6: Sejahtera Concept in Sustainable Development

Image
What is 'Sejahtera'? From my own understanding, Sejahtera for society means harmonious, good, peaceful, calm, prosperous and safe condition or environment. Meanwhile, Sejahtera for a person means to have balanced well-being encompasses the physical, spiritual and intellectual aspects. We must develop the Sejahtera concept within ourselves in order to create a Sejahtera society.  How can I apply the Sejahtera concept in my daily life? Due to the pandemic, I'm currently at my home and undergo online learning. My hometown is located at Jalan Solok Kilang Berapi, Merlimau, Melaka. It is a sub-urban village, where it surrounded by housing estates. I think the best way to apply the Sejahtera concept in my daily life is the '3S' concept, which is 'salam, smile, and share' with my family and neighbourhood.  S(1): Salam    We as Muslim is encouraged to give and spread 'salam' to everyone we encounter in our daily lives regardless if we knew each other or not....
